Did you know that way back Wrigley's use to make chewing gum with chicle harvested from the sapodilla trees from the rain forest in the Amazon. The Sap was collected by the very skilled chicleros and that provided them with an ongoing income for their family. But with time the gum factories started making their gums with synthetic bases so the chicleros were out of work and started to sell their beautiful trees as lumber for money. And that started to threat the rainforests.
About 10 years ago, Deborah Schimberg of Providence, Rhode Island traveled to
Guatemala with her family and discovered “the chewing gum trees”. Amazed (who knew that
gum came from trees?) and intrigued by the possibility of creating a “green” chewing gum
made from chicle, she brought back several blocks of the stuff. She started to work with the possibility of making gum as a family business and she succeeded. I mean who wouldn't want to chew natural gum instead of all those sugared ones on the market?
